So, I was going about my regular routine, dicking around the internet and hanging out in Roleplayerguild’s IRC channel, when someone posts a link to Ligeti’s Requiem. I’m one of those classical music buffs that can only name a handful of composers they’re familiar with, so it wasn’t really surprising for me not to know of Gyorgy Ligeti. I did a little trip to Wikipedia and skimmed through his article. It turns out that he’s quite a famous contemporary composer and his work has been popularized in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. His works… are certainly not that of the norm you’d expect when you say “classical.”
