Sun, Snow, and Song

I love coming home from work or wherever with the sun still up. The weather’s slowly and steadily covering Toronto with a blanket of snow — “blanket of snow” is cliche, I know, but it’s the first time I’ve ever actually seen snow, let alone have it cover everything in sight– and I wouldn’t really have noticed it except that instead of sleeping or losing myself in a book, I was actually paying attention to my surroundings and looking out the window on my long bus ride home.

I saw a layer of cold, shiny, white frosting on roofs, hills, windows, everything, and it just looked so quaint, cute, and pretty to mine virgin eyes that hath only seen snow in photographs and movies. The Cure, Ben Folds Five, Scouting for Girls, Broken Social Scene, Stars, and a whole host of other artists threw shuffled song after shuffled song in my ears, adding a nice, upbeat and hipster-y soundtrack to the latest episode in the “Jean going somewhere” travel clips in my head. Reading Ray Bradbury essays for the past few days also wasn’t helping the forces of darkness and despair.

As I got off at my stop, I looked at my sunlit surroundings. Real Winter with its endless darkness and snow would be peeking around the corner and I plan to enjoy every ultraviolet ray-tainted moment of daylight I can before that happens. I’m totally going to go crazy when summer comes back.
